Basketball Parent 101: What Nobody Tells You Before Your Kid's First Season

The squeak of sneakers, the smell of popcorn, and a gym so loud you can feel it in your chest. Basketball season is one of the best rides in youth sports. If this is your first year as a basketball parent, here's what you need to know before tip-off.

The Season at a Glance

Most school seasons start with tryouts in late October or early November, with games running from late November through February and playoffs into March. Club and travel teams often run spring through summer. Expect two to three practices a week plus one or two games, and more when tournaments come around.

The Basics in Two Minutes

  • Scoring: A basket inside the arc is 2 points, beyond the arc is 3, and each free throw is 1.
  • Fouls: Players are limited, usually five fouls in high school, before they foul out for the rest of the game.
  • Traveling and double dribble: The two violations you'll hear called most. Moving without dribbling, or stopping and restarting a dribble, gives the ball to the other team.
  • Game length: High school games are four 8-minute quarters. Youth games are often shorter.
  • Playing time: Rotations change a lot, especially early in the season. Minutes are earned at practice.

What to Pack

  • Court-only basketball shoes (keeping them off the pavement protects the grip)
  • A labeled water bottle and a healthy snack for after the game
  • Practice shorts, a reversible jersey, and socks that actually fit
  • A warm layer for you, because gyms swing from freezing to sweltering
  • A stadium seat cushion. The bleachers will win otherwise.

Be the Parent Every Coach Hopes For

Cheer for effort, not just points. Let the coach coach and the refs ref. Save questions about playing time for a scheduled conversation, never right after a game. The car ride home matters more than any scoreboard, so try opening with "I love watching you play" and let your athlete lead from there.
